10K + sign petition asking Oakland Co. schools to go virtual

(WXYZ) – A petition is circulating on Change.org allegedly started by a group of Oakland County high school students calling for county schools to switch to distance learning amid continuing threats to schools of the region.

More than 10,000 people have signed the petition, which calls on the county to switch to virtual learning “until threats are lifted or until the winter break.”

The petition reads in part:

“To serve the mental, physical and emotional health of Oakland County students, we demand that:

-All schools in Oakland County will be closed and allowed to transition to virtual school until winter break or until all copy threats are fully investigated.

-School district administrators in all districts of Oakland County publish detailed and concrete plans to ensure the safety of students in district buildings before they return to school in person. Threats to schools cannot be taken lightly and our administrators must put the safety of students first. “

In the wake of the deadly Oxford High School shooting on November 30, there was a wave of imitation threats against Detroit metro schools. Authorities say dozens of minors now face charges.
