HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania. (WATJ) – The Pennsylvania Highways Commission (PTC) reminds motorists that the 5% toll increase for 2022 begins on January 2.

This increase applies to E-ZPass and Toll By Plate customers and will take effect at 12:01 am on January 2, 2022. This will extend to the entire system with the exception of the Southern Beltway (PA Turnpike 576) located west of Pittsburgh.

According to Pennsylvania Turnpike CEO Mark Compton, this is the first time in six years that the rate of increase has fallen below 6%. The PTC said the increase in tolls is generally necessary to cover the costs of servicing the debt resulting from PTC payments to the Commonwealth for transit operations.

“Beginning in July 2022, our transit funding requirement for PennDOT under Bill 44 of 2007 will be reduced to $ 50 million per year,” Compton said. “Finally, we see a light at the end of this very long tunnel. Along with giving ourselves a huge sigh of relief, it allows us to begin to offer customers some relief from these larger toll increases and to focus on essential improvements to our pavement. “

INCREASED TOLL RATES

What does this mean for Pennsylvania drivers? The PTC said the most common toll for a passenger vehicle would drop from $ 1.60 to $ 1.70 for E-ZPass customers and from $ 3.90 to $ 4.10 for Toll By Plate customers. .

For a Class 5 semi-trailer, it will drop from $ 13 to $ 13.70 for E-ZPass and from $ 26.60 to $ 28 for Toll By Plate. The cashless toll for a passenger vehicle at the Westbound Delaware River Bridge will drop from $ 6.10 to $ 6.50 for E-ZPass customers and from $ 8.20 to $ 8.70 for those using PA Turnpike Toll By Plate.

DENVER — Craig Reynolds hit the holeshot hard, then cocked a linebacker and ran around a safety before finally getting shot from behind. But not before picking up a tough 35 yards for a Detroit Lions team that was already down 14-0.

Then he stood up, unbuckled his chin strap and started screaming into the Rocky Mountain sky.

“The momentum really wasn’t on our side at the time, and just hitting that run just, you know, felt like (it was a big moment),” Reynolds said after the game. . “There was a lot of football left. The running backs’ room tries to bring juice and energy to the team, and that’s what it was.

“Just built, you know?”

We know.

Reynolds had a great chance of touching that football in Detroit. He played his prom at a place called Kutztown University, which I swear I’m not making up. Kutztown is a small Division II school located in a not much larger town in Pennsylvania. It’s been 18 years since anyone else from Kutztown has appeared in an NFL game, and only six others have. (One of them is Andre Reed.)

There aren’t many tougher paths to the NFL than this, and Reynolds has struggled accordingly since turning pro in 2019, bouncing from the end of the roster in Washington to Atlanta and finally to Jacksonville. Then the Jaguars cut him in March, and nobody wanted him at all.

So Reynolds went home to Philadelphia and waited for the phone to ring. For months it didn’t work.

Finally, he got a call midway through training camp for the Lions, who were facing a numbers crisis for a preseason game against Indianapolis and were interested in adding Reynolds as a camp body to help get through the exhibition. Except he missed the flight to practice at Allen Park, arrived a day late, and was signed just 24 hours before kickoff against the Colts.

“I introduced myself (to the guys) in caucus,” Reynolds said. “They were like, ‘Yo!’ The coaches showed up on the sidelines. It’s crazy.”

It’s crazy, because after Reynolds introduced himself to his teammates in the huddle, he also managed to score the team’s only touchdown that night. Detroit was pretty much ready to run, with Jamaal Williams, D’Andre Swift, Godwin Igwebuike and seventh-round pick Jermar Jefferson all enjoying some fine camps, but Reynolds also impressed with how he pulled it off with his unexpected opportunity – so thus, the coaching staff began affectionately calling it “Netflix”.

Netflix? Find? Because he was at home watching the streaming service when the Lions dragged him off his couch?

Detroit therefore kept Reynolds on the practice squad after breaking camp. And when Williams (COVID) and Swift (shoulder) fell before Sunday’s game against the Broncos, while Jefferson suffered from injury and illness, Netflix was among a group of squad players. practice who got their shots in Denver. And no one has done more than him,

Reynolds rushed 11 times for team-high 83 yards and helped keep the offense moving despite losing their top two running backs and centers, as well as the Pro Bowl tight end. TJ Hockenson.

“I thought Craig was running hard,” said head coach Dan Campbell. “I thought he did some things. And honestly, I don’t think anyone on this staff is surprised. We love Craig. We thought he would do a good job, and he certainly did.

Of course, none of his carries were better than the 35-yard run in the second quarter. The Lions were down 14-0 and out 135 at 3 under, but were finally on the move near midfield when they handed the ball to Reynolds. He followed a nice block from right guard Halapoulivaati Vaitai, then stiff-armed linebacker Kenny Young before passing safety Justin Simmons into the open field.

After racking up as many teams (four) as yards (4) in his first three years in the league, 35 yards has rarely been so good on an NFL field. You can understand the explosion of emotion when Reynolds unbuckled his chin strap and shouted into the sky.

Moments later, quarterback Jared Goff joined Kalif Raymond on a 7-yard touchdown pass that drew Detroit to 14-7 and helped stop the early bleeding.

“We’ve always loved Craig since pre-season,” Goff said. “He had good days, good (pre-season) games. We sort of always said in our hearts that if he got shot, we would believe in him.

“He’s done some good things, and we’ll see where that leads.”

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) – There is an alarming increase in coronavirus hospitalizations.

As of Thursday, 65,000 patients were receiving care across the country. That’s 20,000 more than a month ago. And thousands of those patients are in the tri-state area.

Many Pennsylvania hospitals are closing in on crisis mode as they fill up again with COVID patients.

“The health care system in Pennsylvania is on the brink of collapse,” said Dr. Gerald Maloney, chief medical officer of Geisinger Health System.

Geisinger Health System, one of the largest health systems in the state, says it is running out of beds at its nine hospitals in central and northeastern Pennsylvania.

“People keep coming in with strokes, heart attacks, car accidents and it’s hard to get them out of the ambulance because we don’t have room in the ER to put them in,” said Dr. Maloney.

Action News’ data journalism team found that Pennsylvania leads the tri-state area in COVID hospitalizations with more than 4,000 patients. New Jersey has more than 1,400 hospitalized patients and Delaware follows with more than 300 patients.

When it comes to daily cases, Pennsylvania also takes the lead with more than 7,000 cases, which is among the highest in the United States.

“When you look at the number of ICUs that require a ventilator, it’s now up to 59%, so over half of those COVID patients need a ventilator,” said Hospital’s Rob Shipp. and Health System Association of Pennsylvania. .

He says it looks like no hospital is escaping the COVID surge.

“From the northeast to the northwest, all the way to the south-central, so all across Pennsylvania, hospitals are feeling a demand for beds,” Shipp said.

SEE ALSO: COVID cases rise in New Jersey and nationwide

Health experts attribute the recent rise in cases to holiday gatherings and the unvaccinated. They say the biggest concern by far remains the delta variant, but they are keeping an eye out for the new omicron variant.

“Of all the patients in our hospitals who have COVID, 88% have not been vaccinated. Forty-six percent of our critical care beds are occupied by these mostly unvaccinated patients,” Dr Maloney said.

With Christmas and the New Year approaching, doctors fear that the situation will improve anytime soon.

“We will persist regardless of the conditions, but do we want to end up in a situation where we have to bring refrigerated trucks to the parking lot to accommodate all the deceased patients? No. We don’t want to do that,” he said. added. said Dr. Maloney.

(The hill) – The Senate voted against President Bidenthe vaccine mandate for big business, giving Republicans a symbolic victory.

Senators voted 52-48 on the resolution, which required a simple majority to pass. Meaning of Democratique. Jon tester (Montreal) and Joe manchin (W.Va.) voted with Republicans, giving him enough support to be sent to the House.

The resolution faces a difficult path in the House, where Republicans are unable to use a similar expedited process to force a vote on the Democratic leadership’s objections. Instead, Republicans are hoping to secure the simple majority needed to force a vote through a discharge petition, which will require the support of a handful of House Democrats.

But Republicans see Wednesday’s Senate vote a significant victory, and it’s the first time they can use the Congressional Review Act to successfully get a resolution targeting a Biden rule through the Senate.

The rule, issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), orders companies with at least 100 employees to require their employees to be vaccinated or undergo regular testing by January 4. .

But Republicans believe it is an excessive attack on the federal government and violates the civil liberties of American workers.

Senator Mike Braun (R-Ind.), Who led the GOP resolution, said Americans should get vaccinated “unless they have a good reason,” but called the vaccine requirement an “ultimatum Which “scared the mainstream America”.

“It’s the government’s heavy hand, it’s over-reaching and that’s when my phone started ringing without picking up,” he said. “I hope members of the House, Democrats in places, will check with your constituents.”

Manchin and Tester both voted for the GOP resolution on Wednesday after joining all other Democrats last week to vote against mandate funding under the short-term funding bill.

Manchin argued in a statement that the federal government “should incentivize, not penalize, private employers whose responsibility it is to protect their employees from COVID-19.”

Tester added this week that he was not “crazy about mandates.”

Biden’s vaccine mandate for big business has met with several legal challenges.

In November, the New Orleans-based U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals temporarily blocked or suspended the rule, calling it “fatally flawed” and ordering OSHA not to enforce the rule. “pending adequate judicial review” requirement of a motion for a permanent injunction.

The Biden administration moved at the end of last month to try to revive the requirement, arguing that “delaying this standard would endanger thousands of people and possibly cost many lives a day”.

“With the reopening of workplaces and the emergence of the highly transmissible Delta variant, the threat to workers is continuous and overwhelming,” added a government lawyer.

An Axios-Ipsos poll released at the end of November showed that only 14% of American employees support the dismissal of workers who refuse to be vaccinated.

But a Wall Street Journal poll released Tuesday showed 50% of voters say they support Biden’s vaccine requirements for employers with 100 or more workers, while 47% oppose the president’s term.

Even if the GOP resolution gets a vote in the House, the White House has warned Biden will veto it. Neither house has the required two-thirds majority to override a veto.

“We certainly hope that the Senate, Congress, will stand up to the anti-vaccine mob and the tests, and we will continue to work to implement them.” If it is the president’s office, he will veto, ”said the White House press secretary. Jen psaki told reporters.

“We have a new variant and the cases are increasing. The chairman was clear. We will use all tools to protect the American people, and we hope others will join us in this effort, ”she added.

Democrats lambasted the GOP resolution ahead of Wednesday’s vote, noting that it came amid concerns about the new omicron COVID-19 variant.

“The worst thing we can do is tie our hands behind our backs and let these new variants spread and develop and new ones after Omicron and so many others. But that’s what the anti-vaccines pushed by Republicans would do, ”said the Senate Majority Leader. Charles schumer (DN.Y.).

“I will vote strongly against this measure, with strong feelings about what is good for this country and about fighting anti-science and theories that seem, like I said, to come from the same place where comes the flat earth theory, that the theory where the sun comes from that revolves around the earth, “he added.” We shouldn’t give it a seal of approval in this room. “
