How to stay motivated to walk – WISH-TV | Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather forecast

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — On Wednesday morning, Andee Bookmyer with Indianapolis Moms joined Daybreak to discuss the benefits of walking. As warmer weather approaches, Bookmyer explained how walking can be just as effective for your physical health as running or cardio workouts.

Walking is a great way to introduce physical activity into your routine. Bookmyer explained the positive impact of walking on the body.

“Walking is such a gateway into the world of exercise and sometimes it gets a bad rap. There is a perception that if it’s not about running, sprinting or doing cardio at high intensity, it’s not effective, but it’s not,” Bookmyer said. “Walking, while low-impact, can get your heart rate up. This can reduce your risk of diseases. It can boost your confidence, improve your mood.

It is important to prepare your body before walking. Here are some recommended steps:

  • Elongation
  • foam rollers
  • Warm-ups
  • Return to calm

Following these steps can reduce aching pain that could result from increased activity.

Bookmyer says baby steps are fine. The key to a successful walk is staying consistent.

Walking also offers mental benefits. Studies show that walking lets you enjoy the moment, improves your mood, and reduces stress and anxiety.

“We don’t have to focus on distance or calories burned, or did we incline or not,” Bookmyer said. “Let’s make it about enjoying real movement and seeing the effect it has on our minds and bodies.”
