Health is more than how a person looks and feels. For some strange reason, every time a child is of school age, they are asked the eternal question?

What do you want to become?

A selective menu is given if the child is unsure.

Doctor, lawyer, engineer, pilot, accountant….

As if the child understood what these jobs entail at that time.

To continue the parody of the circus, the child often chooses something to please the adults, who may gesticulate in delight at his whispered response.

Does this scenario sound familiar to you?

Today in the education sector in Fiji, there is a lot, or should we say, too much emphasis on what a child will become. We seem to be a nation where our children must become factory products when they finish school.

We all have to ask ourselves why do we send our children to school?

Is it only so that they can find a professional job and wear professional labels?

So, have our schools become factories, producing/cloning a mass of workers for the economic market?

What we really need to ask our children is, who are you going to evolve into as a human/spiritual being?

What kind of person will you become? What qualities, talents and dispositions will you develop as a human/spiritual being?

No what will become of you?

This article will argue that for education to be an essential enabler, we must not dehumanize education.

Our education policies must attempt to go beyond the economic imperatives of producing only qualified human capital for economic growth.

This approach is in direct conflict with the UN-sanctioned MDGs and SDGs which promote a humanistic and sustainable development agenda.

In Oceania, education planners need to support a more holistic philosophy of education.

Island economies like Fiji must strategically maneuver and strengthen their cultural epistemologies, values and philosophies while coping with the weight of the neoliberal capitalist market.

The global citizen must first be a versatile, values-driven and holistic person.

Fiji’s contemporary education system educates students to be good workers rather than creative thinkers.

Our children are all born creative and have an incredible capacity for innovation. Creativity should be a priority along with literacy in education dialogues.

Human development in Fiji and the Pacific is not a mechanical process. It is an organic process that gives life.

Today in Fiji’s classrooms, many children with special and unique talents are not properly housed.

Creativity and diversity have little room in today’s education system because schools now operate on the principles of standardization, industrialization and the capitalist market system.

Our schools seem to follow the factory model. Mechanization, rigid assembly line pedagogies and assessment modules result in clones of professional workers and an uninformed population.

The pressure to conform or the demand for rigid conformity to a centralized curriculum, lessons, and formal assessments led to children, who could not conform, being treated as useless by-products of the school factory.

Children are often judged by a single standard of ability. Educators should keep in mind that different students learn at different rates in different disciplines.

Our education system must move away from rigid structural modes of teaching and learning and realize that education is a living system.

Prioritize the emotional, mental and intellectual health of our children and their overall well-being.

Additionally, the cultural ecology or interconnectedness of their life experiences, belief systems, and the communities they come from often conflicts with the formality of the teaching and learning process in their classrooms. .

Human values such as cooperation, caring, compassion, tolerance, ethics and sharing should be the learning tools instead of blatant competition and an outdated grading system where the learner focuses only on a numerical position instead of acquired knowledge and skills.

Education in human values must be more integrated during the revision of curricula. Educational objectives should not be exclusively economic.

Pacific values are to be demonstrated in a practical form through the integration of creative arts, music and environmental projects in all schools in Fiji.

The ideology of sustainable development must be integrated into the program and contextualized. Group and community projects should replace text-based activities and formative assessments.

Much research has been conducted to show that without a culture-infused curriculum, the Western education system will not allow everyone to succeed in school.

Although using the most advanced and digitally enhanced technological tools in the education sector, students in Fiji must first understand, appreciate and value their ocean identities on the world stage.

There is definitely a need for a more holistic and broader curriculum with an authentic and creative teaching and learning environment in all of our schools.

We must do away with ideologies and educators who practice containing and constraining strategies in the classroom.

A more personalized approach would work better. The focus should be more on empowerment and inspiration than on control mechanisms.

Every child should feel like a winner at the end of their school career. As Samuli Paronen said, “Real winners don’t compete.”

The world is changing faster than our ability to adapt. This was true even before the planet was rocked by a global pandemic. But the COVID-19 pandemic has knitted together the very fabric of our daily existence, delivering a decade of change in one terrifying spring. Today, whether you’re trying to regain a sense of normalcy or acquire a purchase on a new path forward, the prospect of unpredictable and rapid change looms over every decision. Change, of course, is a constant state. But the pace of recent change highlights the ever-widening gap between the people we have in our organizations and the people we need.. The faster the world changes, the bigger the chasm becomes.

These changes require a fundamentally different kind of leader at every level, with new values, mindsets, and behaviors needed to ensure agility, adaptability, and accountability – leaders who know how to survive and thrive in a disruptive and changing world. acceleration. We need a whole generation of healthy leaders to drive the engagement, innovation, profitable growth and long-term value creation of tomorrow. Essentially, leaders must be good to lead well.

There are five common traits of healthy leaders:

  • Rooted leadership
  • Conscious Leadership
  • Healthy teams
  • healthy change
  • healthy culture

The first characteristic of healthy leaders: grounded leadership

Being deviated from one’s trajectory is stressful and takes time. And the winds of change are blowing from all directions. Even strong leaders have problems under these conditions. They feel tossed and turned by the wind; fear of taking responsibility, making mistakes or missing opportunities; or as if they were looking for a way out. They may be hit by the challenges posed by the global pandemic, violent turns in the economy, or dramatic shifts in the market. Or they may feel a change in atmospheric pressure inside themselves, beset personally and professionally by the stirrings of doubt, uncertainty, or stress. You can even be that leader.

Healthy leaders stay grounded in an uncertain world. They hold on and thrive personally and professionally by developing deep roots of personal leadership that help keep them healthy and grounded. The six roots of grounded leadership are:

1. Physical Health: Be nimble in a fast-paced world.
2. emotional Health: Be tough and nimble in uncertain times.
3. Intellectual health: Being relevant in a complex environment.
4. Social health: Be connected in a digital world.
5. Occupational health: Be competitive in a demanding time.
6. Spiritual Health: Be Generous in a Cynical World

The fundamental trait of healthy leaders is their learned ability to develop and nurture each of these roots with balanced discipline. To know where they are and where they need to go, healthy leaders embark on a journey of self-discovery because they intuitively know (or have learned) that who you are determines what you do.

Healthy leaders perform better

Our Healthy Leader Assessment combines a psychological approach with behavioral metrics that measure a person’s character and leadership performance based on who they are, what they do, and how well they perform.

Here are our findings:

  • Leaders perform significantly better when they score higher on the Roots of Healthy Leadership.
  • The higher the leadership health score, the better the leadership performance score as assessed by bosses, peers and staff.
  • Each domain of health is strongly correlated with other people’s reports of a leader’s performance.
Rosen_ Research on Grounded Leaders.png

As the graph above shows, leaders with higher health scores in the six major domains also performed better. Who you are really determines what you do and how you perform. Being healthy and grounded is the first of the five traits of a healthy leader.

What is the state of health of your leaders? Take the quiz discover.

Health is more than how a person looks and feels. Conversations about health should include all eight dimensions or domains of well-being: mental, social, emotional, spiritual, financial, occupational, environmental, and intellectual.

That’s the goal of Living Well Month, a national event held in March to promote general well-being and the education provided by family and consumer science professionals to improve the lives of people, families and communities.

The Oklahoma Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences works through the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service to offer information that will help families lead positive, healthy lifestyles. Whether you’re trying to manage your diabetes through meal planning and exercise, making healthcare and insurance decisions, or getting advice on effective parenting techniques, Extension FCS has an answer based on research.

To make every month a “good living month,” consider these tips:

Engage children in at least 60 minutes of physical activity most days of the week. Adults need at least 30 minutes of physical activity. Play sports or recreational games, put on some music and dance, hula hoop or do an obstacle course. Walk or bike around your neighborhood. All moves count.

Start planning a garden now to work in the spring and summer. Gardening is a great physical activity. This activity could also promote your mental and environmental well-being.

Rethink your drink. The average adult human body is made up of approximately 60% water. Water regulates the chemical process and reactions of every living cell. It carries nutrients and oxygen. Water also helps maintain normal bowel habits and prevent constipation. Reduce the amount of soft drinks and fruits consumed daily.

Eat a variety of healthy foods. Eat colorful fruits and vegetables every day. Most people need to increase their intake of fruits and vegetables. Eat a slice of banana over cereal for breakfast. Enjoy a veggie-laden sandwich for lunch. For dinner, steam vegetables and make a fruit parfait with yogurt for dessert. Try new fruits and vegetables. If there’s one you don’t like, try making it a different way. To see www.choosemyplate.gov for more information on nutrition for you and your family members.

Read, read, read. Go to the library and consult books. Keep the mental stimulation flowing all year round, no matter what your age. This will boost your intellectual health.

Talk to a friend or start a journal to get rid of your thoughts and feelings. Staying in control of emotional health can be difficult, but it’s important.

Check out courses on parenting, finances, nutrition and/or food preparation offered by your extension office. To see https://extension.okstate.edu/county/cherokee/ for more information on upcoming offers.

Maintain a healthy home. Check that your smoke detector is working properly and test for the presence of radon. Help manage allergies and/or asthma by cleaning and vacuuming regularly to reduce allergy triggers in the home. Avoid accidental poisonings by keeping medicines locked up and cleaning supplies and other poisons out of reach of children.

Keep your family’s finances under control. Track your expenses and update your budget regularly. Eat at home often because dining out is usually more expensive. Plan your menus and use coupons as a planning tool. Creating and sticking to a budget, as well as paying off debt, are great first steps to financial well-being.

The eight dimensions or domains of well-being are connected and mutually supportive. Rate your overall well-being and take small steps to improve your health during Well Living Month and throughout the year.

Did you know that numerous studies have shown that a healthy lifestyle is valuable for both the person with dementia and their care partner?

What are the components of a “healthy lifestyle”? Addressing the five dimensions of well-being in our lives creates a holistic sense of well-being and fulfillment. If you are healthier, you will perform at your best.

Get the latest headlines sent to you

These five components are physical health, emotional health, social health, spiritual health and intellectual health. They are the foundation of your healthy lifestyle.

GEM promotes better overall health in the following ways:

Physical health needs are met through our chair exercise class, dancing during our live music programs, and referrals to other fitness classes.

GEM’s focus on emotional health is based on education, understanding the disease and knowing the person. This knowledge allows for smoother navigation for everyone involved. GEM also collaborates with the College of L’Albemarle. We will be offering “best care” training for someone living with cognitive challenges in March.

Social Health: Most people underestimate the power of social well-being, which is about interacting and communicating with others. Studies have shown that loneliness and isolation often lead to depression, social anxiety, and mental health issues. GEM’s Harmony Café provides opportunities for participants, including volunteers. We create a community of caring friends for the person living with cognitive challenges and their caregivers who are on the same path.

Spiritual Health: GEM supports our faith community by training our MemoryCare Navigators. These people from diverse faith communities are trained in dementia care and have resources for their faith family. These skills allow our navigators to share information with their religious leaders and families within their community.

Intellectual health is the dimension that recognizes one’s creativity. Stimulating mental activities lead to a more harmonious relationship with the care partner. GEM offers art classes. Our GEMz ‘Let’s Tell a Story’ program provides an opportunity to discuss images from our lives and what they mean to us. We invite guest speakers from our community to share information on lighthouses, the Wright Brothers flight and other topics. Despite cognitive challenges, individuals can still enjoy learning and creating.

Achieving and realizing these elements of good health can be difficult, but with caring friends, GEM programs and a good understanding of what someone living with cognitive challenges can enjoy and achieve will improve the quality of their life all the time. supporting their care partner.

While most of us would agree that we would rather employees be happy than unhappy, the nature of happiness is so complex that it often seems like something beyond an employer’s duty. After all, as Richard Easterlin describes so well in his eponymous paradox and in his recent book Lessons from an economist on happinessfinancial well-being often has a fairly limited impact on our overall happiness.

That shouldn’t discourage us, however, especially since research from the University of Oxford found that happy workers are around 13% more productive than their darker peers. “We found that when workers are happier, they work faster making more calls per hour worked and, importantly, convert more calls into sales,” the researchers said. to say.

The researchers mirror Easterlin’s finding that paid work has little to do with our happiness, so what does it do? Insight may come from Harvard scholar Tal-Ben Shahar, who describes what he believes to be the key to happiness in his recently published book. happiness studies.

The SPIRE of Happiness – Spiritual, Physical, Intellectual, Relational, Emotional

It refers to the need to focus on ourselves in order to be truly happy, and only when our “whole being” has been satisfied will we be on the right path. By doing this, we can begin to understand the different components that make us who we are, and can then begin to address those aspects of our being and the relationship between them.

“Every element of the whole being – every part that makes up the whole – is an indirect path to the promised land of happiness,” he writes. “Consistent with the interdisciplinary nature of happiness studies, I have come to view well-being as a multidimensional and multifaceted variable that includes spiritual well-being, physical well-being, intellectual well-being, relational well-being and emotional well-being.

These five SPIRE elements allow us to indirectly aim to become happier, whether through regular exercise, focused work, continuous learning, and quality time with family and friends, but Beh-Shahar thinks there are has a number of things we can strive to provide in the workplace to contribute to a happier workforce.

spiritual happiness

For example, in the context of spiritual happiness, the key is to achieve the kind of goal-filled life that has been talked about so often in recent years. Although having meaning in our professional lives may not be what many describe as a spiritual experience, Ben-Shahar believes that spirituality is essentially a search for meaning, so it should be completely apply.

If you want to make changes in this way, tools like task creation can be a fantastic introduction. Job creation is when employer and employee work together to design meaningful and useful work, with evidence suggesting this not only makes us more productive, but also more engaged with our employer and happier. in our life.

physical happiness

Physical health has obviously come to the fore during the Covid pandemic to ensure that people are not only safe from disease but also protected from the various stresses that have emerged over the last 18 months. He re-emphasized the importance of things like good sleep, adequate exercise, and healthy eating to our happiness and efficiency at work.

We’re seeing more and more managers take more interest in the whole life of their employees, and things like workout games have been shown to not only improve employees’ physical well-being, but also cohesion and team unity.

Intellectual health

For intellectual happiness, Ben-Shahar believes curiosity is the key. This makes perfect sense as we live in an age of lifelong learning where it is paramount that we are all able to adapt to the rapid pace of change in the world around us. It is no longer enough to think and learn to be something done by the few in our organizations and the rest just go through the motions every day.

Developing a culture of curiosity in our organizations requires not only the psychological safety that allows people to express themselves, even against the grain, but also the creation of conditions for curiosity to flourish.

Relationship happiness

The Covid-19 pandemic has shone a light on the importance of others to our happiness, with loneliness reaching endemic levels. In the workplace, it has also shown its importance, with friendships at work being strongly linked to happiness and longevity at work. The virtual nature of much of working life during Covid-19 has made building these relationships a bit more difficult and it is important that life post-Covid fills these gaps.

Ben-Shahar also suggests that it is important for us to encourage ourselves and others to give freely to those around us. Taking an open and helpful approach to our work has been demonstrated by Adam Grant not only for us as individuals, but also for our teams and organizations. Giving to others also makes us happy, so it’s definitely something to pursue.

emotional well-being

Last but not least, our emotions, and we can often fall into the trap of thinking that emotions have no place at work because it’s neither professional nor commercial. Ben-Shahar suggests this is counterproductive, and while managers are to cheer us all on, emotions are a big part of that. We are seeing this more and more in the workplace with an appreciation for things like grief, but also the anxieties that have surfaced during the pandemic.

Managers need to be able to deal with all of their staff’s emotions to enable them to be truly happy and engaged, and being versed in active listening can be a good first step towards achieving such a culture.

Achieving happiness in these uncertain times is by no means easy, but following the SPIRE approach is sure to get you moving in the right direction. Whether you’re just managing yourself or managing others, it’s something to aspire to.

Three NC congressmen have joined 35 fellow Republicans in signing a letter asking President Biden to take a cognitive test.

“We are writing to you again to express our concern about your current cognitive status,” read the letter sent Tuesday to Biden, 79. Its author, Rep. Ronny Jackson, R-Texas, served both Barack Obama and Donald Trump as the president’s physician from 2013 to 2018.

Among the 37 co-signers of the letter are North Carolina Rep. Greg Murphy, R-3rd District; Rep. David Rouzer, R-7th District; and Rep. Madison Cawthorn, R-11th District. Like the letter writer, Murphy is a physician.

“We believe that, regardless of gender, age, or political party, all presidents should follow former President Trump’s lead in documenting and demonstrating strong mental capabilities,” the letter said. “While you had your annual physical exam on November 19, 2021, you either did not take a cognitive test or those results were withheld from the public.”

“White House physician Kevin O’Connor, DO, has certified that you are ‘fit to successfully perform the duties of the presidency’ in a purely physical manner; however, we are concerned about your cognitive and mental abilities,” the letter continues.

Several members of Congress sent Biden a similar letter last June. He never responded to their request. “Since then, the American people have steadily lost faith in your ability to effectively and competently manage your duties as President of the United States,” according to the letter this week.

Polling data suggests public concern about Biden’s mental health, the letter said. Among the findings cited: 48% of voters “disagree with the statement that you are mentally fit.”

“Independents, by a 23-point margin, do not believe you are mentally fit,” according to the letter.

Jackson’s letter cites recent examples of Biden publicly insulting a reporter with an expletive and struggling to read the numbers during a press conference. Both incidents could indicate signs of mental decline.

“This is not just a recent trend, as your mental decline and forgetfulness have become more apparent over the past two years,” the letter explains. “During the campaign trail, you often forgot the names of the states you were in for campaign rallies.”

“The American people should have absolute confidence in their president,” Jackson added. “They deserve to know that he or she can serve as head of state and commander-in-chief. They deserve full transparency about the mental capabilities of their highest elected leader. To achieve this, we invite you to immediately submit to a cognitive test. We implore you to then release the test results, so that the American people know of the full mental and intellectual health of their President, and to follow the example set before you.

The letter notes that in 2018, “political opponents and members of the media demanded” that Trump pass the same type of test. Trump complied and passed a test, “at which he excelled.”

O’Connor and Dr. Anthony Fauci, who is listed as Biden’s chief medical adviser, are copied on the letter to Biden.

A Connecticut high school student is channeling his frustration and anger over the continued school mask mandates in his state into awareness, awareness and activism.

He wants others to know how difficult forced mask-wearing has been for students day in and day out, throughout the pandemic — and why he thinks it should stop.

Lucas Johnson, 17, and other Connecticut high school students want their classrooms and school experiences back to normal now throughout the constitutional state. They know their state is dropping the mask mandate — according to Gov. Ned Lamont, the mandate will end Feb. 28 — but they don’t want to wait another minute.

Nor do they know what is on the horizon.

“This isn’t just a fight for freedom,” Johnson told Fox News Digital this week in a phone interview. “This is a fight for our generation.”

Students fear that municipalities and local communities will end up extending mask mandates – leaving students stuck behind masks well beyond February.

Johnson, a high school student from Danielson, Connecticut, and his mother, Patricia Johnson, recently spoke to Fox News Digital.

“All of our science shows that children are the least susceptible to COVID but the most vulnerable to everything we’ve done,” Lucas Johnson said, referring to growing anxiety, depression and other issues. mental health issues that have emerged over the past two years.

“I will continue to fight as hard as I can until the children return to a normal environment at school,” he added.

Johnson founded the advocacy group, Connecticut Students for Liberty. On Wednesday, February 8, the group traveled to Hartford, the state capital, and stood on the steps of Connecticut’s Statehouse, speaking out about how mask mandates have affected their lives. .

Among Johnson’s comments that day, which caught the attention of some local media: “COVID mitigation tactics at school, especially the mask mandate, have been detrimental and harmful to mental health students,” as Connecticut Insider noted of Johnson.

Lucas Johnson described his small advocacy group to Fox News Digital as 30 to 40 kids “willing to do hard work” for their freedoms.

“It’s an outlet for kids,” he also says of the group, “to get involved and stand up for themselves.”

Their goal is to hold the Connecticut state government accountable.

The students regularly demonstrate peacefully, hold press conferences, conduct email and letter campaigns, follow legislation and communicate through their dedicated Facebook page.

Even though restrictions across Connecticut may soon ease, these worried students are not. They want their state to “drop the mandates immediately.”

Johnson isn’t just focused on the present. It anticipates potential dangers around the state plan.

“The Governor is asking the Legislature to write the mandate into law for the period between February 15 [when Gov. Lamont’s executive order expires] and Feb. 28,” when authority is to be transferred to school administrators, Lucas Johnson told Fox News Digital. “Since they don’t have a bill in front of them, we don’t know who will take authority over mask mandates after the executive order expires.”

He worries that this discrepancy opens the door for the legislature to transfer power to the Connecticut Department of Public Health and the Connecticut Department of Education. “We don’t want another term under a different name,” he said.

“Hide your emotions”

Johnson said he and his peers felt “disconnected from their teachers” every day at school because of the masks they had to wear.

“Children are traumatized,” he said. Masks, he said, make it easier for children to “hide their emotions”.

Forced mask-wearing, he says, has also created an unhealthy fear of COVID inside school – not something that is often reported.

“You walk out of school and there’s no mask anywhere,” Lucas Johnson said.

So “school is a scary environment now.”

All of this and more is why Johnson’s group staged a recent school strike by 150 students who oppose mask mandates.

“We’ve seen Lucas work tirelessly to stand up for his peers and stand up for those who feel let down by the adults in their lives, namely the professionals at their schools.”

Johnson also said he had issues with COVID mitigation tactics at school. He has had to be quarantined four times due to contact tracing – and the stories he hears from other students and peers inspire him to stay active and involved.

Incidentally, his mother, Patricia Johnson, stands firmly behind her son as he speaks loudly for his comrades.

“We are very proud of our son Lucas,” she told Fox News Digital in an email.

“My husband and I have worked hard to instill courage in our children to stand up for what they believe in,” she also said. “But over the past two years, we’ve seen Lucas work tirelessly to stand up for his peers and stand up for those who feel let down by the adults in their lives, namely the professionals at their schools.”

“Not only did he help these students find their voices,” his mother continued, “he worked so that they were no longer bullied and silenced for trying to express their painful experiences.”

“Really worried”

Kathy Koch, PhD, an educational psychologist based in Fort Worth, Texas who focuses on children and the impacts of COVID, told Fox News Digital this week that she was “really concerned” about what was going on. with children and forced masking.

Mask-wearing, Koch said, made sense at the start of the pandemic — now, “we need to prioritize the well-being of children and the purpose of their attendance at school,” she said .

She doesn’t say any of this lightly, she added, because “the virus is real”.

But “if the children get [the COVID virus], they tend not to have any serious effects or symptoms. I care about their emotional health, their intellectual health, their social well-being. I know a child who went home to his mother [recently] and said, ‘I don’t know anyone at school. And I don’t know what anyone looks like. Social well-being is essential” for our young people, she stressed.

The purpose of the school, she also said, is “to learn how to live life. We missed the mark on so many things,” said Koch, founder and president of Celebrate Kids Inc., a organization that helps parents and educators. understand and meet the needs of today’s children. She is also a faculty member of Summit Ministries (Summit.org).

“I’m very worried” about what’s going on, Koch said. “I don’t want any of our young people to be defined by loss. They lost football seasons, piano recitals, spring plays – and grandma and grandpa couldn’t come to their degrees. These things are very real,” she noted.

“But I want young people to pay more attention to what they are doing have what they don’t have. And we, as adults,” she advised, have to lead them that way.
