Why was she detained?

Brittney Griner was arrested at Sheremetyevo airport on February 17, 2022. Russian authorities say they found vape pen cannabis oil cartridges in her luggage, reports The Independent.

On March 5, 2022, Russia’s Federal Customs Service issued a statement confirming in February that they detained a basketball player at the airport. Their statement did not include Brittney’s name and identity at the time.

Griner’s agent, Lindsay Colas, later released a statement to The Guardian. He said: “We are aware of Brittney Griner’s situation in Russia and are in close contact with her, her legal representation in Russia, her family, her teams and the WNBA and NBA.”
